９．関係副詞

第６回の英文法講座は前回の関係代名詞に引き続き、関係副詞を取り扱います。 

＜１．関係副詞の意味＞

　　関係副詞は、普通、「前置詞＋関係代名詞」に相当する。
　　This is a house in which I live.
　　　　　　　　　　　　=where

＜２．関係副詞の基本用法＞

　　場所を表す関係副詞：where
　　This is the city where my father was born.

　　時を表す関係副詞　：when
　　I remember the day when I first met her.

　　理由を表す関係副詞：why
　　I don't know (the reason) why she was absent from school.
　　注意：the reason は省略が可能

　　手段を表す関係副詞：how
　　Tell me how you have mastered English.
　　注意：先行詞the wayと関係副詞howが、一緒に用いられることがないため、上記のようになる。

　　（補足）先行詞がある場合には、where, when, why, howの代わりに、thatも用いられる。
 

＜３．関係副詞＝先行詞＋前置詞＋関係代名詞＞
　　That is when I awoke in the morning.
　　　　　　= the time at which
　　This is where I went yesterday.
　　　　　　= the place to which
 

＜４．関係副詞＝前置詞＋先行詞＋前置詞＋関係代名詞＞
　　Things are never where one wants them.
　　　　　　　　　　　= at the place at which
 

＜５．複合関係副詞＞
　・時
　　whenever= at any time when　「～するときはいつでも」
　　wherever= to [in/at] any place where　「～するところはどこでも」

　　You may come whenever you like.
　　I want to go wherever you're going.

　・譲歩
　　whenever= no matter when　「いつ～しようとも」
　　wherever= no matter where　「どこに～しようとも」
　　however= no matter how 「どんなに～しようとも」

　　Whenever you may come, you'll be welcomed.
　　Wherever she may go, she'll be loved.
　　However hard I tried, I couldn't solve the question.
