１６．挿入

英文法講座の最終回は、挿入を取り扱います。

＜１．修飾語句の挿入＞

　　副詞句などの副詞的要素は５文型のどこに挿入されていても、それを正しく見抜く必要あり。
　　We are always in danger, in clinging to an old tradition, or attempting to reestablish one, of confusing the vital and the unessential.
　　☆下線部分は副詞句の修飾語句
　　（私たちは、古い伝統に固執したり、伝統を再建しようとする際に、きわめて重要なものとそうでないものとを混同してしまう危険性がある）

　　The quality of the rice crop will, undoubtedly, be better this year.
　　（稲の作柄は疑いもなく、今年は[例年よりも]よいだろう）

　　He seldom, if ever, goes to the movies.
　　（彼は、仮に映画にいくことがあるとしても、滅多に行かない）
　　上の文は、
　　He seldom, (even) if (he) ever (goes to the movies), goes to the movies.
　　という文における括弧部分の省略と考えられる。 

＜２．連鎖関係代名詞節＞

　　英文法講座の関係代名詞を参照のこと
　　To my regret I lost the money which I think my father borrowed from his friend.

　　He seems to like the village where I suppose he was born.

＜３．主節の挿入＞

　　The express, answered the guard, starts at ten o'clock.
　　= The guard answered that the express starts at ten o'clock,
　　☆列車の車掌が答えたのは過去であるが、列車の出発時間は（臨時便を除く）、日常の習慣的なものなのでansweredの目的語の名詞節の中の時制はstartsと現在形となる。

　　Competition, we have learned, is neither good nor evil in itself.
　　= We have learned that competition is neither good nor evil in itself.
