１５．接続詞As

15回目の英文法講座は、接続詞Ａｓを取り扱います。 

＜１．様態・程度「〜のように」＞
　　As the poet says, a little learning is a dangerous thing.
　　As a tiger stalks his prey. so they hunted him.
　　（トラが獲物に忍び寄るように彼を追い詰めた）

＜２．比例「〜するにつれて、〜に従って」＞
　　As one becomes older, one becomes more careful.
　　比較級と一緒に用いられると、「～するにつれて」「～に従って」という訳がしっくりくることが多い。

＜３．時「〜の時、〜の間に」「〜しながら」「〜していく中で」＞
　　He came up, as I was speaking.
　　☆「主語＋be動詞」が省略されることもある。
　　ただし、省略できる場合は、主従両節の主語が同じであること。動詞で省略されるものは、be動詞に限る。
　　→英文法講座の省略を参照のこと。
　　したがって、この例文の場合は、省略されません。

　　She must have been very pretty as (she was) a girl.
　　☆she wasが省略されると、asが前置詞に見えるので注意が必要。

＜４．理由・原因「〜なので」＝since＞

　　As the door was open, I walked in.

　　☆「主語＋be動詞」が省略されることもある。
　　ただし、省略できる場合は、主従両節の主語が同じであること。動詞で省略されるものは、be動詞に限る。
　　→英文法講座の省略を参照のこと。
　　したがって、この例文の場合は、省略されません。

　　As (he is) a married man he has to think of the future.
　　☆he is が省略されると、asが前置詞に見えるので注意が必要。 

＜５．強調「実際に、この通りに、ご覧のように」（分詞構文の中で用いられる）＞

　　Standing as it does on the hill, this building has a fine view of the town.
　　（このように丘の上に立っているので、この建物からの町の眺めは素晴らしい）
　　☆standingを受けているので、as it doesになる。

　　Written, as it is, in plain English, this book can be read easily.
　　（実際、簡単な英語で書いてあるので、この本は簡単に読める）
　　☆(Being) writtenを受けているので、as it isになる。 

＜６．状態「〜の通りで、〜のままに」＞

　　Leave your desk as it is.
　　（机をそのままにしておきなさい） 

＜７．譲歩「〜だけれども」＞

　　Little as he was, he was not afraid.
　　（彼は幼かったが、こわがらなかった）
　　この文は、もともと、
　　Though he was little, he was not afraid.
　　の文である。
　　この文で、littleを文頭に持ってくると、
　　Little though he was, he was not afraid.
　　という文になり、thoughをasに書き直すと、
　　最初の文の
　　Little as he was, he was not afraid.
　　になる。

　　Little boy as he is, he is very talented.
　　（彼は幼い少年であるが、非常に能力があります）
　　☆Little boyの前に冠詞は付かない。

　　Mush as she liked him, she did not marry him.
　　（彼女はとても彼が好きだったが、彼とは結婚しなかった）
　　この文は、もともと、
　　She liked him as much as, she did not marry him.
　　という文であり、as much asを文頭に持ってくると、
　　As much as she liked him, she did not marry him.
　　文頭のAsが省略されて、
　　Much as she liked himl, she did not marry him.　　
　　となる。 

＜８．限定「〜する限りでは」＞

　　He is a good cook, as cooks go nowadays.
　　（彼はこの頃のコック一般から見れば優れたコックだ）
　　☆as＋主語＋go：主語なみから言えば

　　His criticisms, as I remember, were highly esteemed.
　　（思い出せる限りでは、彼の評論はかなり高い評価を受けた） 

＜９．注釈「〜なのだが」＞

　　この用法は、接続詞としての使い方です。
　　これに似ているのが、関係代名詞としての"as"です。
　　接続詞と関係代名詞の違いは、asを除いて完全な文であれば、接続詞、そうでない場合は、関係代名詞です。

　　As luck would have it, I arrived in New York just on the day of her arrival.
　　（幸運なことであったが、私はちょうど彼女が到着した日にニューヨークに着いた）
　　
　　As it happened, I had no money with me.
　　（たまたま私にはお金がなかった） 

＜１０．名詞を限定する形容詞節のような働きをする・「〜のような、〜した時の」＞

　　There are few such students as he is.
　　（彼のような生徒は滅多にいない）

　　There were no confectioners, as we know them, till the 19th century.
　　（１９世紀まで、我々の知っているような菓子屋はなかった）

　　The next century will see the end of most of the natural world as we know it.
　　（２１世紀になれば、我々が知っているような自然界はほとんどなくなってしまうことでしょう） 

＜１１．成句的用法＞

　・as ～ as any　「どれ（誰）にも劣らず」
　　It was as good a place as many.
　　
　　He is as great a novelist as (any that has) ever lived.

　　In the 1950s life in the United States was as good as (any life that) it gets.
　　（１９５０年代の米国の生活は、米国の持ちうる最高の部類の生活だった）
　　☆as～as it gets：最高の部類
　　
　・as[so] long as
　　①「～している間」＝ while
　　　I shall never forget your kindness as long as I live.
　　　（一生涯、あなたの親切を忘れることはないでしょう）
　　②「もし～しさえすれば」＝ if only
　　　You may keep the book as long as you don't soil it.
　　　（汚しさえしなければ、その本を持っていてもかまいません）

　・as well as 「同様に」
　　He gave us food as well as clothes.

　・as good as　「も同様に」＝ all but ＝ almost
　　Since he had eaten nothing for days, he was as good as dead.
　　（何日も何も食べていなかったので、彼は死んだも同然であった）

　・as far as　「～に関する限りでは」
　　As far as I am concerned, I have no objection to the plan.
　　= As for me, ～
　　（私に関する限りでは、その計画には異存はありません）

　・驚きの意を含む比較「なんともこんなに」　（as ～ as 数字）
　　He has as much as one billion dollars.
　　（彼は１０億ドルも持っている）
　　☆as much as = no less than

　　This dates back to as far as the 6th century.
　　（これは６世紀までさかのぼります）

　　This tower is as high as 300 meters.
　　（この塔の高さは３００メートルもあります）
