12.仮定法
英文法講座11回目は、仮定法を取り扱います。
この仮定法が、使えるようになれば一人前ですね。
ちょっと長いですが、最後までおつきあいください。
<1.仮定法の一般形>
仮定法は、事実に反する仮定、あるいは実現可能性が低いことに対する仮定を行います。
・仮定法過去
①話者が話す時点(基準となる時点)と同じ時点における事実の逆を仮想表現する。
②現在または未来にいての想像を表す。実現可能性が比較的低いという話者の気持ちを含むことが多い。
形:If+S1+V1[動詞の過去形]~, S2+助動詞の過去形+V2[動詞の原形]...
意味:もし、S1がV1すれば、S2はV2するだろうに
例文です。
If I had a little money, I could buy this.
(もし、私がもう少しお金を持っていれば、私は、これを買うことができるだろうに)
→この裏には、「お金をもっていないから、これを買うことができない」の意味がある
③if節の中にshould/were to を用いて、未来のついての想像を表す。
shouldを使った場合は、実現可能性が低いという話者の気持ちを含むことが多い。(仮定法未来と呼ばれることもある)
形:If+S1+should/were to+V1[動詞の原形]~, S2+助動詞の過去形/現在形+V2[動詞の原形]...
意味:もし、S1がV1すれば、S2はV2するだろう
例文です。
If you should die tomorrow, I would[will] die, too.
If the man should live beyond 1999, his gravestone would need an ugly recarving.
(仮に1999年を過ぎても生きていれば、彼の墓石は醜く彫り直される必要が出てくる)
※主文に「would+動詞の原形」が「用いられるのは、主に次の4つの場合が考えられる。
Ⅰ 過去の習慣
When they were young, they would often play tennis together.
(若いとき、彼らはよく一緒にテニスをしたものだった)
Ⅱ 仮定法過去
Ⅲ 想像の気持ちが強く入った推量(広い意味での仮定法過去)
If their prices show any signs of faltering, the fallout would hit dot.com share, too.
(それらの株価が下落しそうな兆しを少しでも見せると、その結果がネット関連株にもダメージを与えることになるでしょう)
Ⅳ ていねい、婉曲
I would say he has caught cold.
(彼は風邪をひいているんでしょうね)
・仮定法過去完了
話者が話す時点(基準となる時点)よりも古い時点における事実の逆を仮想表現する。
現在完了の事実の逆も仮定法過去完了となる。
形:If+S1+had+V1[動詞の過去分詞]~, S2+助動詞の過去形+have+V2[動詞の過去分詞]...
意味:もし、S1がV1していたら、S2はV2したであろうに
例文です。
If I had had a little money, I could have bought that.
(もし私がもう少しお金を持っていたら、私はあれを買うことができただろうに)
If I had not been enjoying the work, I would not have done so much of it.
(もし私がその仕事を楽しんでいなかったのなら、その仕事をそれほどはしなかっただろうに)
□「助動詞の過去形+have+過去分詞」の形になっていても、仮定法過去完了でないときがある。
Ⅰ would have+過去分詞
He said that he would have moved into the new house by next Monday.
(来週の月曜日までは新居に引っ越しているであろう、と彼は言った)
未来完了形が時制の一致で「would have+過去分詞」の形をとったもの。
He would have arrived at Kyoto station by now.
(彼は今頃は京都駅に着いてしまっているであろう)
未来完了の内容に推量を加えた表現である「will have+過去分詞」に婉曲、ていねい、想像の意味合いが入って、「would havge+過去分詞」の形をとったもの。
Ⅱ could not have+過去分詞
She said that he could not have said so.
(彼がそんなことを言ったはずがない、と彼女は言った)
「cannnot have+過去分詞(~したはずがない)」が時制の一致で「could have+過去分詞」になったもの。
Ⅲ should have+過去分詞
You should have seen the film.
(君はその映画を見るべきだったのに、見なかった)
「~すべきであったのに~しなかった」という意味を表す「should have+過去分詞」。
□that節の中の仮定法
They thought that if they had more time to do research, they could have a better understanding of the problem. [仮定法過去]
They thought that if they had had more time to do research, they could have had a better understanding of the problem. [仮定法過去完了]
☆視点が過去にあっても(thought)、その視点のある過去と同時点における事実の逆を仮想表現する場合は、仮定法過去を用い、その視点のある過去よりももっと古い時点における事実の逆を仮想表現する場合は、仮定法過去完了を用いる。
・仮定法現在
以下の例文は、一般に仮定法現在と言われているが、仮定の意味はなくなっしまっている。
The old woman walked with care, lest she (should) stumble.
(つまずかないように、注意して歩いた)
I demanded he (should) leave the room.
(私は彼に部屋を出て行けと要求した)
We suggested to him that he (should) go alone.
(彼は一人で行くべきである、と我々は提案した)
要求、提案を表す動詞を用いる場合、その後のthat節の中は仮定法現在(原形)となる。
<2.if節を使わない仮定法>
・wish
①I wish [S] V[動詞の過去形/were]...
SがVであれなばなあ/Vすればなあ
I wish I were richer. (仮定法過去)
②I wish [S] had V[動詞の過去分詞]...
I wish [S] [助動詞の過去形] have V[動詞の過去分詞]...
SがVであったならばよかったのになあ
I wish I could have passed the test. (仮定法過去完了)
・as if(=as though)
①as if [S] V[動詞の過去形]...
あたかもSがVするかのように
He behaves as if he knew everything. (仮定法過去)
②as if [S] had V[動詞の過去完了]...
あたかもSがVしたかのように
He looks as if he had seen a ghost. (仮定法過去完了)
③with...「~があれば」
With a little more money, you would have succeeded.
= If you had had a little more money, you would have succeeded.
④to-不定詞による代用
To hear him sing a song, you would take him for a girl.
= If you heard him sing a song, you would take him for a girl.
⑤Supposing that+過去形/過去完了形
Supposing that he had studied hard, he would have passed the test.
= If he had studied hard, he would have passed the test.
⑥主語の中に仮定の気持ちが入る
A true friend would not have betrayed you.
= If he had been a true friend, he would not have betrayed you.
⑦名詞句+and
One more effort and you would have succeeded.
= If you had made one more effort, you would have succeeded.
⑧「もし~がなければ」
Without his advice, I would have failed.
Bur for his advice, I would have failed.
If it had not been for his advice, I would have failed.
Had it not been for his advice, I would have failed.
☆これらはいずれも仮定法過去完了。
☆Without~、But for~が仮定法過去の意味で使われている時には、If it were not for ~、Were it not for ~で書き換えられることができる。
⑨otherwise「もしそうでないとすれば/もしそうでなかったとすれば」
I am not feeling well; otherwise, I would go with you.
= If I were feeling well.
⑩If only~ 「ただ~でさえあれば[あったら]なあ」
Would (to God) that~:「~であれば[あったら]なあ」
□現在[過去]の事実に反する強い願望を表す。
If only I knew the answer now! 現在の事実の逆を仮想表現する
If only I had known the answer yesterday! 過去の事実の逆を仮想表現する
Would that it were true! 現在の事実の逆を仮想表現する
= How I wish ~
⑪It is time [S] V[動詞の過去形] 「もうSがVすべき時だ」(仮定法過去のみ)
It is (high) time you went to bed.
<3.従属節は仮定法過去完了、主節は仮定法過去>
形:If+S1+had+V1[動詞の過去分詞]~, S2+助動詞の過去形+V2[動詞の原形]...
意味:もし、S1がV1していたならば、(今)S2はV2するであろうに
If he had given up smoking then, he would be healthy now.
<4.仮定法特有の省略・倒置>
If節においてifを省略し、助動詞または、be動詞を主語の前(ifの位置)に置くことがある。
If I were free, ~→Were I free, ~
If I had known it, ~→Had I known it, ~
If the man should live beyond 1999, ~→Should the man live beyond 1999, ~
<5.「婉曲・ていねい」の用法
もともとは仮定法であったが、仮定の意味よりも、「婉曲・ていねい」の意味に推移したものがある。
Would[Could] you come with me?
以上です。
仮定法は、いろいろありますが、
基本は、
1.仮定法の目印であるwould, shouldなどの助動詞の過去分詞が出てきたら、まず、仮定法と疑うことです。
2.次に、If節にあたる内容はどこにあるか(主語など)を見つけ出すとその英文の意味が理解できます。
仮定法は、常にIf節がある訳ではないのでご注意してください。
